The actress with the delicate smile today is remembered primarily as Charlie Chaplin's leading lady in scores of his films. Several attempts by Chaplin to catapult her career into stardom failed and she essentially retired from films in 1924. A close personal friend of Chaplin's, he kept her on his payroll until her death from tonsil cancer in 1958. She was married for a time to Test-Pilot John Patrick Squire (1899-1945) and lived with him in San Francisco until his untimely death from a heart attack. She lived out the remaining years of her life in Los Angeles with her sister, Myrtle (1886-1965).
